Told you I’d return.

The trip at the end of December had 3 goals and the Abraham Lincoln sites were missed. It was my first failure in travel logistics and I hang my head in shame.  Anyway, there were more food places to hit.

4th time in Chicago in 5 weeks. Even after hundreds of views the skyline never fails to tug heartstrings.

Inviting downtown Vincennes in west central Indiana.

IMG_5838

South of downtown is the Indiana Military Museum. The director graciously spent some time with me explaining artifacts.

IMG_5839 IMG_5842

Just across the border from Indiana, Henderson is a road food destination. The rooster (?) indicates that Mr. D’s is recognized for their Fried Chicken.

IMG_5843 IMG_5844

Tucked into a shabby neighborhood, Thomason’s Barbecue has several meat offerings and I choose the west Kentucky staple Mutton.

IMG_5846 IMG_5847

Through the decades Bon Ton Mini has morphed into only a down home local’s restaurant.

IMG_5850 IMG_5851

They are also all about Fried Chicken having been featured in Road Food, Gourmet and numerous magazine and newspaper articles. It had the clichéd ‘shatteringly crispy skin’.

IMG_5853

Topped the meal off with Derby Pie. Which should be called Addict Pie since I couldn’t stop eating it.

IMG_5855

Crossed the tracks and into another era in Sebree.

IMG_5860

Kept the cruise at 75 MPH on the Western Kentucky Parkway towards the center of the state.

Abraham Lincoln was born in a cabin on this spot on February 12, 1809.

IMG_5865

For decades it was thought this was the cabin, but now it remains as a memorial and indicative of the type of cabin he would have been born in.

Downtown Hodgenville.

IMG_5873

20 miles NE of Hodgenville the Lincolns lived at Knob Creek from 1811 to 1815.

Bloomfield

The approach to Shelbyville is lined with stately homes.

IMG_5883 IMG_5885

Crossed the Ohio River into Cincinnati just before dusk.

Camp Washington Chili since 1940. I found it watery and over-spiced.

IMG_5893 IMG_5894

A beacon of dessert in the night, Putz’s Creamy Whip has been delighting families since 1938.

IMG_5896

The spectacular ice cream in this Strawberry Shortcake was dense and ultra-creamy.

IMG_5897

First learned of Jungle Jim’s on the Food Network a dozen years ago.

IMG_5902 IMG_5908

In Fairfield NW of Cinci this behemoth store covers 200,000 square feet and has 150,000 products. The aisles of wares are accessorized with a potpourri of décor.

Germantown

IMG_5912

IMG_5913

The dingy neighborhoods surrounding Richmond, Indiana contrast the tidy and inviting downtown.

IMG_5914

Near Lafayette for the first time ever I ran out of audio books. Fortunately Chicago was close enough to use FM2 presets.

A color explosion of sugar at Albaneses Candy Factory in Merrillville.

IMG_5917

In the Windy City by 11AM the tripometer showed 1,180 miles of driving since 5PM on Friday.

Spent the next 4 hours in my favorite city. Seemed kinda silly to cap off a road trip for this long in a city I’m in so often.

IMG_5920

Brunch at the always busy Publican in the near west side.

IMG_5921 IMG_5923

Chakchouka is a Tunisian dish of baked eggs in tomatoes, onions and potatoes with feta and pine nuts.

IMG_5924

Headed up to Armitage and then down to Little Village for panaderias and paleterias.

IMG_5927 IMG_5931

Further south in Brighton Park with another panaderia and Tastee Freez.
