Starting at Jungfernstieg, a promenade by Binnenalster.
asdfas
Walking around Binnenalster.
Beautiful day to circle one of the twin lakes.
Rathaus (city hall) was built 1886 to 1897.
Another view from the courtyard.
And the interior.
Hauptkirche St. Petri
It was built in the 14th century, mostly destroyed in an 1842 fire and rebuilt 1844-1849.
Starting to stroll the pedestrian Monckebergstrasse.
It was kinda...dull.
War damage didn't leave too many grand buildings.
Speaking of blah....
But...LOVE European train stations!
How awesome is this?!
The aura was palpable.
It's a rule to get Currywurst when in Germany.
Can't tell you how much that hit the spot.
Walking past Rathaus.
To head to the western part of town.
Mahnmal St. Nikolai
Dates to 1195
But,it was bombed in WWII air raids.
War's destruction is sad.
Continuing to walk west.
Drool. M4.
Use scooter a lot in Chicago, but only the second time in another country (Bogata, Columbia) to save time.
Continued west on the scooter to Reeperban.
Referred to as "Sin City".
Apparently you can, um, get certain duties done here.
At night it is a big party area.
And boy, did it smell like it.
Heading back east stopped at Hauptkirche St. Michaelis.
Built 1906 to 1912
Heavily damaged 1943 to 1945
Repaired 1947 to 1952
A Baroque masterpiece.
Back in central Hamburg for Gebrannte Mandel Ahornsirup, which translates to Burned Almond Maple Syrup.
Old and new.
Those public spaces Europeans are so good at.
Let's pause to take a look at Hamburg in 1945.
Some grandness was restored.
While a lot is new.
Stanhofe was home to the Gestapo from the 1930s until, well, you know.
I'm so artistic.
Neuer Wall
Prada, Gucci, Burberry, Chanel, Armani, Hermes, Louis
Welcome to Kiel, Germany.
Holstenstrabe
Nice enough town.
Pedestrian streets, parks, canals...
And gelato! I got Aprikose which I think was apricot.
Europeans are better at living outside.
