The Map

Wednesday, December 7th, 2022

Wondering if Duran Duran was going to be on tour in 2023, checked and found their only US date for the foreseeable future was 12/30/2022 in Atlantic City.

Thursday, December 8th, 2022

Bought concert and airline tickets.

Monday, December 26th, 2022

Up at 1AM, check Southwest flight status before driving to airport- ON TIME, drive to airport, park, shuttle, check monitor for gate- CANCELED.  No app notification, text nor e-mail.  App wouldn't work to check for alternative flights.  Figured out a roundabout way on app to find all Southwest flights for the next two days were UNAVAILABLE.  Booked another flight for Wednesday.

Tuesday, December 27th, 2022

Up at 5AM, found the next day's flight was canceled with nothing available until the 1st.  Left house at 9AM and started driving, arrived in Fredrick, Maryland at 10PM.

Feels like I was just here...

10

And here.

15

March 30th, 1981

20

Embassy Row

25

Last time at National Cathedral was for President Reagan's funeral.

30

The northern cornerstone when DC was plotted in 1792.
40
Tastee Diner
1946
Silver Spring, Maryland
Always look for the elbow wear on counters.
45
During FDR's WPA there were three planned communities. Greenbelt, Maryland was one of them.

47

Third time in Gettysburg, the town synonymous with the Civil War.

52

That monument is where the Gettysburg Address was delivered. A masterful speech I memorized one summer in the mid-80s.

54

Learned about the Gettysburg Museum of American History from the YouTube channel The History Underground.

56

It's a series of rooms crammed with artifacts of American wars, Presidential items and more.
58
Lots of 101st airborne in this room (Band of Brothers), including Major Dick Winter's uniform and jacket.

60

Items owned by JFK.

62

Leaving Gettysburg.

70

Wolfe's Diner
1955
Dillsburg, Pennsylvania
Trying to hard to absorb the history of generations.
72
Absolutely outstanding Meatloaf.

74

Views while filling in the map in the southcentral part of PA.

76
78

Harrisonville. All of it.

80

Views are nicer in summer.....

82

When The Gateway opened during WWII, it was the only business in Breezewood. Now this town is all about services and The Gateway features restaurants, a grocery store, chaplain, billiards, arcade, TV room, showers, fitness and more.

99

Diners never fail to provoke excitement.
100
Scrapple, a staple in Pennsylvania and parts of Maryland and Delaware, is leftover parts of the pig mushed together with cornmeal and spices then pan fried.

102

Photogenic West Chester.

104

Miss Oxford Diner
1954
Oxford, PA

Just imagine what this diner has seen.
110
Another staple, only made a small dent in Chipped Beef from an aversion of getting fat or having instant clogged arteries.

112

Heading north crossing my own path from years' past.

114

Reading is old, active and not refined at all.

116

Candy's Home Made Ice Cream in Shoemakersville has unique flavors such as this Boston Cream.
118
Pottsville as the route continues NE.

120

Few hours of no civilization, then going through Tunkhannock.

122

America

124

Meshoppen must have been quite the town.

126

Again, nothing for an hour and then Montrose.

128

Carbondale, over in the NE corner of PA.

134

A touch of the old west in Honesdale.

The Dining Car
1960, moved to this site north of Philadelphia in 1980.

150

Met Merle and Spencer in Ecuador, they live in downtown Philly.

152

Fourth time in Philadelphia.

158

The great symbol of America.

164
166

Walking to....

168

Reading Terminal Market. Since a visit to Philly is not complete without a stop at this 1893 landmark.  Been to every bakery here.170
Had already been to every bakery in Chinatown.

174

It's always gnawed at me to have not visited the National Constitution Center.
176
The circular second floor did such a good job on the Constitution's creation and use through the generations I actually learned a lot.
179
180

Statuary Hall with all the Signers.

182

Since I'm six foot, George Washington must have been really tall.

184

Yep, another threepeat, but it is always absolutely mind boggling to imagine what happened at what was the State House for the Colony of Pennsylvania.

185

In what we now call Independence Hall, a nation was formed.
187
An assembly of the greatest men of any day signed the Declaration of Independence, then later debated the Constitution. George Washington sat at that very chair overseeing the Constitutional Convention from May 25th to September 17th 1787.

190

Next to it is Congress Hall. This building served as the United States Capitol from 1790 to 1800.

192

Here the House of Representatives met for the fledgling new nation.

194

Upstairs was the Senate. It was here George Washington (2nd term) and John Adams were inaugurated.

196

B. Franklin, printer.

200

Got an $8 scoop of Eggnog Ice Cream at The Franklin Fountain.
202
The Museum of the American Revolution.

204

Opened in 2017.

206

A most excellent job in using narrative and artifacts to teach about the reason for the Revolution, the battles and the outcome.
208
Spent 2 hours, but needed more time.
210
Franklin Court is where his townhomes were.

  230

His grave is a few blocks away.

232
235

OK, will theirs be better than Geno's, Jim's or Tony Luke's?
237
Nope.

238

Philly, I will return.

242

Third time in Atlantic City.

250

Tony Baloney's is a bit off the main drag and has creative gourmet pizzas. It was so good I ate grains.
252
Time for the concert!

256

It was sold out.

308

Found co-worker Jess, who lives south of Philly, by looking for that hair.

300

Rio, their 2nd album that made them international stars, was released in 1982.

310

Simon and Nick.

314

John, Roger, Simon and Nick.

322

Great show!

Saturday, December 31st, 2022

Was supposed to fly back on the evening of the 2nd, but thanks to Southwest had to starting driving back today doing a zig zag through northern Pennsylvania to fill in the map.

399

A slice of Colonial in Newton.

400

A walkable downtown.

402

A most appetizing Spanish Omelet in an old home.
404
New Hope is very visitor friendly.

406

A photo moment everywhere.

410

Sidewalks lined with cafes and boutiques.

412
414

Doylestown is handsomely attired in brick and charm.
416
418

Over to Easton.

420

Which was a surprisingly larger town.
422
Got the Blueberry Cheesecake one.

426

Opened in 1931? Well. One must get something.

424

Dealing with fog heading west.

428

Filling in the map.

430

Though it's a (regional) chain, Brusters has excellent ice cream. Coffee Ripple is my 9th flavor and gets a 5 out of 5.

434

Town at a crossroads.  All of it.

438

Northcentral PA.

442

Few hours of fog, rain and watching for deer. Saw three. Two were still alive

446

Sunday, January 1st, 2023

Erie sprawls along the lake of its name.

452

This Art Deco and French Renaissance theatre was built in 1931 and designed by Chicago architects Rapp and Rapp.

Down an alley in Fulton Market.
