Visby, Gotland Island, Sweden

Saturday, June 9th, 2022

Gotland Island lays off mainland Sweden.

1100

Visby is on Gotland's west coast.

1102

Visby has centuries of history as empires came and went since 900AD.

1104

Fortress walls encase a tangle of that history and fairytale scenes.

1152

Starting in one of the town squares- Donner Plats

1112

Starting to walk the whole town trying to take it all in.

1118

From alleys.

1120

To courtyards.

1122

An enchanting scene at every turn.

1124

Stora Torget is the main square.

1126

Which is framed by S:t Karin (St. Catherine's).

1128

It dates to 1250.  It was so mystical to stand in its ruins imagining pageantry of centuries past.

1129

A few blocks away, Visby Sankta Maria Domkyrka is still in use.

1132

Not looking too shabby for being built in 1255.

1134
1138

A unique octagonal shape, Helge And is also from the 13th century.

1136

Beauty sprouting from spaces between cobblestones.

1140

St. Nicolai towers over residences.

1146  1144

 From 1230.

1142

Norderport (north gate), was one of several toll gates.

1148

It was neato to see the archer's windows and recesses in the walls where floor timbers would have been.

1156

The ruins of Sankt Clemens.

1158

Drotten Church was built in the 13th century.

1160

And abandoned in the 16th century at Reformation.

1164

S:t Lars

1168

This interior is different,

1172

that there are passageways through the walls.

1174  1176

Allowing to see this.

1178

And look over at Drotten.

1180

Carefully navigating imagining these being used 700 years ago.

1184  1186

Lunch on the main square at Bakfickan.

1192

Fish laden in an expertly crafted brooth, each spoonful was a delight; balanced with the rich aioli and fresh herb. Take a piece of warm bread from the brown paper bag and slather with local butter to dip in the luxurious brooth.  Twenty bucks....

  1194

Belly full, back to exploring.

1202

This side of town was much more touristy.

1204

The young lady helped me choose bakery made with locally ground flour.

1200

Then ice cream with local blueberries.
1210
  Beautiful day.

1212

Continuing to walk south.

1216
1218

Exited at Soderport, yep, that translates to south gate.

1220

To walk the walls.

1222

The walls and towers survive. Amazing to absorb their history and the tales those towers hold.

1232

A detour to Ostercentrum, a modern part of Visby.

1228

You can climb one tower.

1248

 Back in the walled city.

1254

Passing through the botanical gardens.
1250
S:t Olof’s was the largest church in Visby. Most of it was demolished in the Middle Ages to use its stones for homes.

1252

I may have to move here.

1256

One last time in Stora Torget, the main square.

1258

Got some Saffron Gelato to sit and watch the square.
1264

1266

Heading out of this wonderful town.

1270

The harbor.
